The Xavier Coates decision to play for the Australian Kangaroos over PNG Kumuls which he made his international debut with has set off a national debate in Rugby League mad PNG. It may seem like a massive blow to the Kumuls preparations for the Rugby League World Cup but for the first time in history the Kumuls outside backs stocks is deep and peaking.

THE Intrust Super Cup match between the SP PNG Hunters and Burleigh Bears on Sunday illustrated several areas of concern which should be addressed soon.
The Australian players are always bigger, bulkier and heavier than our boys. Someone should have found a way to use that to our advantage instead of using our usual strategies. If we can’t go through them, we certainly can go around, over or under them. The only time this simple strategy was used was when Jokadi Bire ducked under the chest high defense of two bear’s defenders and raced away to score in the left corner. HUNTERS PREDICTION Based on yesterday’s trial and fans opinions we have put together a predicted line up for the Hunters 2020 campaign. 1 TERRY WAPI Easily the best back the Hunters have. Has to do something crazy if he’s not picked. 2 JUNIOR RAU Does the hard carried out of trouble. Safe player who can find the try line. 3 JOE JOSHUA X Factor all round can create something out of nothing. Looks to have formed a combination with Rau. The Hunters need to play smarter football using their minds and skills in order to do better in their running game, kicking and defence.
They need to play intelligently and try things that will stretch, push and bend the defences. By Andrews Peter Thank you Michael Marum, not for the close 26-28 score line performance by our boys but for taking into consideration some of the valid points that we raised through the Social Media. Because you paid attention to (critical) observers on the sideline, there was an encouraging improvement from the previous two mostly disheartening performance by our team. HUNTERS coach Michael Marum is urged to drop halfback William Mone for his poor performance.
The game between the Hunters and Falcons on Sunday show no input from Mone as playmaker. Is he still shopping for a fullback for the SP PNG Hunters competing in the Queensland Intrust Super Cup competition this season? Or could this local kid just be the man answering some of the questions hovering over his head on a permanent fullback for the Hunters.
With SP PNG Hunters coach Michael Marum playing a gamble week-in week-out, he could be already finding a solution to the jigsaw puzzle. And could it be this 23-year-old from Manamiro village in Central Province. Jeffrey Lemb writes.
Why am I not interested in the Hunters any more and what bullshit MM has to say about this useless team. I dont buy the daily papers anymore. Change the make up of the team or sack the coach and things will change for the better. Stop this joke now. Whoever is responsible for Rugby League in this country should be equally concerned. I have seen all your comments thus far and feel that most of you are short sighted and allowed emotions to take the better of you. Kimil Rugby Football League president Michael Tee is calling on the PNG Rugby Football League to properly scout for raw talents throughout the country.
Tee made the call after one of his players Joe Frank who performed exceptionally well during the popular Coca-Cola Ipatas Cup competition, was overlooked for selection at the top level. He said Frank is a star off-season player, who started his career in the Kimil off-season league and made his way to the Digicel Cup. He was selected to play for the Waghi Tumbe side from 2015 to 2016. Last season, he was drafted by the Mendi Muruks, and is most likely to retain his spot in the Southern Hghlands franchise side for this season which gets underway on March 25. Tee firmly beleives Frank is one of those talented players who deserves better recognition from the national selectors. He was selected in the PNG Hunters 50-man side in 2016, but failed to make it through further. He is a utility player who can play center or five-eighth. Tee is now appealing to national selectors and the PNG Rugby Football League to have a strategy in place so that they can visit the local leagues and scout for potential talents. He said there were so many talents in the local leagues who deserve better recognition. He said the Ipatas Cup has created a pathway for raw talents who deserve some form of recognition. “We have one or two potential players. But when they are in a losing side that doesn’t qualify for a Gold Pass (Ipatas Cup) to the second-stage of the competition, then they (players) get overlooked,” Post Courier By Wesly John Kome (Hunters fan) A guy known as freight train by QRL/ ISC commentators is not tall as Wellington Albert or fat (bigger body) as Enoch Maki but he runs hard as if there's no tomorrow for him. The utility Kumuls/Hunters veberatan is always humble by his skills and style of playing footy. He is too passion about his footy as has never say die in every game he plays. Rejecting an offer to study at Enga Teacher's college after completion of year twelve grade was not a bad decision, he made a choice for the sake of serving the rugby league's mad nation was the toughest decision one could ever make and his time devotion, commitments and efforts was brought in to fruition as he has the reputable name In rugby league in PNG today. He's the shiest guy who never talks alot and instead he smiles and walks away whenever you meet him. He is another role model to upcoming kids who wish to persue your dream of becoming renowned rugby player like him. He has the true spirit of sportmanship hence he always plays with all of his heart, soul and spirit as putting people of PNG in his mind first. As you can see him every time hes too emtional on and off the field. This is his 5th consecutive year playing in ISC and probably be one of the most senior players in hunters squad today. His seniority will add values to hunters current squad to defend the title this year. Go Minoga..your crazy fans are ready to see you bulldozing through the try-lines. |
