Is he still shopping for a fullback for the SP PNG Hunters competing in the Queensland Intrust Super Cup competition this season? Or could this local kid just be the man answering some of the questions hovering over his head on a permanent fullback for the Hunters. With SP PNG Hunters coach Michael Marum playing a gamble week-in week-out, he could be already finding a solution to the jigsaw puzzle. And could it be this 23-year-old from Manamiro village in Central Province. Clean shaven and standing at 179cm, Edene Gabbie is slowly and surely making his presence felt for the Hunters since making his debut in the opening round against Ipswich Jets on March 11, 2018.
Playing for Dobo Warriors in the Port Moresby Rugby Football League competition, he was tested at centre, on the wing and at fullback. Marum said Gabbie started off playing at centre and wing. “Yes, he is slowly getting into the team… he started playing at centre, wing and fullback. He is out there again,” Marum said. “He is a local kid we picked up from a local club so it will take a lot of time for him to settle in. “He was good again today (Sunday, July 15) against the Northern Pride. Last week (previous week), we swapped him with Wawa Paul … one or two fumbles there but yeah he’s got a big future in front of him.” His rugby league has not restricted him only to Port Moresby but across the Bismarck Sea to West New Britain Province. He represented Team Central in the rugby league 9s competition at the 2017 PNG Games in Kimbe, West New Britain and was part of the team that made it to the medals playoff, eventually beating Madang to clinch gold in the medal playoff. Even scoring a double in the County Round 19 of the Intrust Super Cup against the Norths Devils on Sunday could be new for his fans in Lae, Morobe Province, but for Gabbie it is nothing new – he likes scoring and does it with a smile or even worse poking his tongue out. Earlier in the season he also picked up a double on his comeback against the Tweed Head Seagulls in the Hunters 32-18 victory at the Oil Search National Football Stadium in early April. With the Prime Minister’s XIII challenge coming up in September, Gabbie could be tightening his grip on the spot in the side. Asked on his chances for a PM’s XIII spot, Marum said: “I know it is a few months away and it is possible, well depending on his form. “(However) The Prime Minister’s XIII is all about selecting our best team. And that is the last thing you want to talk about … right now you want to concentrate on the Hunters and how we can keep it (our chances) alive again.” Post Courier
