Kimil Rugby Football League president Michael Tee is calling on the PNG Rugby Football League to properly scout for raw talents throughout the country.
Tee made the call after one of his players Joe Frank who performed exceptionally well during the popular Coca-Cola Ipatas Cup competition, was overlooked for selection at the top level. He said Frank is a star off-season player, who started his career in the Kimil off-season league and made his way to the Digicel Cup. He was selected to play for the Waghi Tumbe side from 2015 to 2016. Last season, he was drafted by the Mendi Muruks, and is most likely to retain his spot in the Southern Hghlands franchise side for this season which gets underway on March 25. Tee firmly beleives Frank is one of those talented players who deserves better recognition from the national selectors. He was selected in the PNG Hunters 50-man side in 2016, but failed to make it through further. He is a utility player who can play center or five-eighth. Tee is now appealing to national selectors and the PNG Rugby Football League to have a strategy in place so that they can visit the local leagues and scout for potential talents. He said there were so many talents in the local leagues who deserve better recognition. He said the Ipatas Cup has created a pathway for raw talents who deserve some form of recognition. “We have one or two potential players. But when they are in a losing side that doesn’t qualify for a Gold Pass (Ipatas Cup) to the second-stage of the competition, then they (players) get overlooked,” Post Courier
