SP PNG Hunters coach Stanley Tepend says preseason squad member and Lae Tigers fullback Sanny Wabo deserves his spot in the Hostplus Cup team. Tepend responded to critics saying there was no nepotism in the Hunters selection processes and every player had made the team strictly on merit. He said Wabo was an experienced fullback in the Digicel Cup and replaced PNG Kumul Edene Gebbie, who left the Hunters preseason training prematurely. Wabo was named in the Hunters’ initial 40-man pre-season squad in December but took up another deal with a third-tier club in the Sunshine Coast Rugby League. However, the deal didn’t work out and Wabo was recalled into the Hunters early last week where he started training with the side. Tepend said Papua New Guinea international Gebbie, who showed interest to play for the Hunters in 2023, left the club halfway through preseason as he wanted to pursue a move to Australian competitions. BRISBANE Bronco David Mead has accepted a A$1,500 (K4,100) fine for contrary conduct for his involvement in a melee in Saturday’s 34-16 upset win over the Sydney Roosters. The Central native reacted to Roosters enforcer Victor Radley’s dangerous contact on fellow Papua New Guinea-born Broncos winger Xavier Coates in the 68th minute at the Sydney Cricket Ground. New South Welshman Radley, 23, was sin-binned twice and reported four times in what may cost him a few National Rugby League (NRL) matches on the sidelines and the chance of a debut Origin appearance. The Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League has joined the people of Simbu and all rugby league followers in mourning the death of former PNG Kumul captain Bal Numapo. Numapo aged 57 from Ogel village in the Sinesine Yongumul District in Simbu Province died following a severe stroke at 10.00am last Saturday August 1, 2020 in Kundiawa. PNGRFL Chairman Sandis Tsaka said Bal Numapo debuted as PNG Kumul No. 85 against Great Britain on August 5, 1984 against Great Britain in Mt Hagen as a centre. He went on to represent PNG on 14 more occasions scoring four tries, kicking 18 goals and a field goal. Great Britain Lions will play the PNG LNG Kumuls at the Oil Search National Football Stadium in Port Moresby on November 16. The announcement was officially made yesterday by the Rugby League International Federation southern hemisphere General Manager Jeremy Edwards who was providing details of the Lions tour of the southern hemisphere. “Papua New Guinea and New Zealand will host the Great Britain Lions Tour down under. That is the first time in 13 years the Lions have been down in the southern hemisphere, coached by Wayne Bennett,” Edwards said. WITH the annual Pacific rugby league test scheduled for next month PNG Kumuls coach Michael Marum has made it clear that players only in major competitions will be considered. The Kumuls, who were initially scheduled to play Lebanon, will now face the Fiji Bati in a one-off test. Marum said selectors would focus on Q-Cup, NRL and Super League when looking at players for his squad which is expected to be named next month. With several former Hunters including Bland Abavu, and David Loko and Digicel Cup players plying their trade in country leagues in Queensland, Marum said the competitions were not up to the level expected of players and it would be hard to assess their form. |
