The announcement was officially made yesterday by the Rugby League International Federation southern hemisphere General Manager Jeremy Edwards who was providing details of the Lions tour of the southern hemisphere.
“Papua New Guinea and New Zealand will host the Great Britain Lions Tour down under. That is the first time in 13 years the Lions have been down in the southern hemisphere, coached by Wayne Bennett,” Edwards said.
“The Great Britain Lions are thrilled to be finishing their tour in Papua New Guinea – the only nation in the world where rugby league is the number one sport, known for their fans and best in the world who turn up to support their home team.”
Edwards said they are grateful for the sponsors and governments for supporting in which the spotlight will be on PNG Kumuls taking part in the Oceania Cup and Great Britain Lions.“Matches played here will be high definition and will be broadcasted live across Australia, PNG and the Pacific and also in the United Kingdom,” said Edwards.“Showcasing the stadium (Oil Search National Football Stadium), Port Moresby and PNG to the world, generating tourism and opportunities that we would like to bring to the top tier more often in the future.”Edwards said it will be an exciting day for International Rugby League, the Kumuls and PNG and it has taken a huge team of partners to make this happen.
