THE 2024 preseason camp for SP Hunters in the Hostplus Cup will start this week with the announcement of the head coach and wider squad, says chief executive officer Scott Barker. With the resignation of outgoing coach Stanley Tepend last month, it seems likely that that assistant Paul Aiton would step up for the top post to guide the club in the new season. “Pre-season starts this week. We will have an announcement of the head coach and training squad later this week,” Barker told The National yesterday. Hunters were two places shy of making the finals and finished 10th in the overall rankings this year. A SECOND half fight-back by the SP PNG Hunters in Brisbane Saturday was not enough to overcome a 0-22 halftime deficit against the Wynnum Manly Seagulls as they went on to lose 24-28.
But it was enough, though, to prove that Stanley Tepend’s team has the talent and mental strength to stay in the contest regardless of how many point they were behind by. The Hunters outscored the home side five tries to one in the second half after letting four tries in the opening 40 minutes of the Hostplus Cup round 10 fixture at BMD Kougari Oval in eastern Brisbane. Both teams scored five tries in a typical “tale of two halves”, Seagulls coach Mat Head said. Ase Boas and SP PNG Hunters take on Justin Olam's SC Falcons this coming Sunday. PNG Kumuls team mates a few days ago and now adversaries this weekend. This weekend's match marks the first of five Home Games that will be played in consecutive weekends. All games are now MUST WIN GAMES to ensure Our Hunters reach the top six spots on the ladder. SP PNG Hunters Co Captain Noel Zeming and versatile back Adex Wera have been recalled for this Sunday’s top of the table clash against Redcliffe Dolphins at the National Football Stadium in Port Moresby on Sunday May 1st at 3pm. This weekend will also see forward Esau Siune play his 50th Intrust Super Cup game for the SP Hunters. Siune joins Wartovo Puara Jnr and Adex Wera to achieve this milestone. Wartovo Puara Jnr reverts back to hooker while Watson Boas returns to join brother Ase in the halves. Timothy Lomai has also been named in the starting line up to partner co-captain Adam Korave in the back row. Coach Michael Marum announced his side to meet Redcliffe Dolphins upon arrival from Brisbane today following their two points loss to the Burleigh Bears in the Anzac Day clash yesterday. Marum said the loss has pushed the Hunters to 3rd spot with Redcliffe moving to 2nd spot on points differential after beating Easts Tigers in a thrilling 28-26 victory. He said this is a must win game as the Hunters will be on a bye for the next two weeks. “After Sunday’s game against Redcliffe will be the representative round when the Pacific Test between the PNG LNG Kumuls and Fiji Batis will play in Sydney the following weekend. The Hunters are on bye in Round 10,” Marum said. This weekend’s match will see both teams play for the annual Stan Joyce Cup – named after SP Brewery managing director Stan Joyce to remember the Hunters first ever win in the Intrust Super Cup match against the Dolphins in Brisbane in 2014. Tickets are being sold at all Big Rooster outlets in the city – K50 for grandstand and K25 for outer stands. The team is: 1. Adex WERA 2. Bland ABAVU 3. Noel ZEMING (Co-Capt) 4. Thompson TETEH 5.
