THE Papua New Guinea Hunters were on the receiving end of a 60-28 thrashing
yesterday by the Tweed Heads Seagulls. The capitulation was almost as bad as Brazil’s 7-1 losing effort to Germany in the World Cup semi-final last week. The Queensland Cup Round 19 fixture played at Piggabeen Sports Oval saw a revamped Hunters side put on their worst defensive display of the season, leaking 11 tries. Although Michael Marum’s men scored six tries, with only two being converted, the game was over at halftime with the home side 32-0 up. Seagulls try scorers were Ricardo Parata (2), Michael Burgess (2), Blake Anderson, Luke Dumas, James Wood, Jamal Fogarty, Matt King, Cory Blair, Pele Peletelese. Fogarty kicked seven conversions, while Anderson kicked one. The loss exposed the Hunters biggest problem in their debut season, which has been winning away games. The result sees the PNG side drop to seventh on the ladder still on 21 points, while Tweed Heads are now in third place on 27 points still five behind competition leaders the Northern Pride on 32. One positive aspect of the Hunters game was their fight-back in the second half which saw them score all 28 of their points through Thompson Teteh (2), Garry Lo, Noel Zemming, Dion Aiye and Willie Minoga. Despite this brave effort the visitors were matched for points in the second stanza with the Seagulls also posting 28 points. One of the few high points of the game for the Hunters was that winger Lo’s try tally for the season stands at 19 tries which sees the 21-year-old still in the lead on the top try-scorers list. Centre Thompson Teteh, who carried a leg injury into the game, proved his potency bagging a double as well. At times the Hunters defence resembled an open gate with Seagulls finding gaps and shrugging off would-be tacklers with ease. The Hunters edge defence as well as their ability to scramble when under pressure was found wanting far too many times for Marum’s liking. The Hunters return home today and have five days to find their defensive form when they take on the Ipswich Jets in Kokopo this Saturday. Comments are closed.
