THE SP PNG Hunters club held a fun day with sponsors and community yesterday at the National Football Stadium.
This was part of the Hunters 2018 programme and activities for the new season. Hunters coach Michael Marum said it was all about taking some time out of their training schedule and getting the players to relax and interact with fans and sponsors. “Even though we didn’t get as many people in compared to last year everyone involved enjoyed their time with the squad and the players enjoyed their time off as well,” Marum said. The Hunters spent yesterday morning playing touch and doing basic skill drills as well as taking pictures and signing autographs and chatting with fans. Marum thanked the National Football Stadium board of trustees, management, major sponsor South Pacific Brewery, minor sponsor Air Niugini (who presented gifts to the Hunters players and coaching staff), for helping to organise the fun day. Hunters merchandise including caps, shirts, balls and supporters gears — was presented to all who attended the fun day with a breakfast with fans also organised. Women’s player Carol Francis, who attended the fun day, met up with her favourite player Adam Korave, who returned to the Hunters fold after a season spent in the Ipswich rugby league competition in Queensland. Other fans also had the opportunity to meet and chat with their favourite players. Korave and squad mate Edene Gabbie were happy to chat with their fans — both are from Koiari, Central, and play for the Dobo Warriors. Coincidently Francis is a former Warriors player from the club. Korave, a former Hunters vice-captain, is an important inclusion in Marum’s squad for 2018 with the 28-year-old’s experience needed after the retirement and/or departure of the bulk of the pack led by Esau Siune (retired, Hunters staff), David Loko (retired, Digicel Cup) Henry Wan (released), Wellington Albert (Widnes Vikings) and Stanton Albert (Widnes Viking). Gabbie, 22, made the final cut for the 2018 Q-Cup season and said he was excited about helping the Hunters defend their premiership and added that he was gaining a great deal of experience training and working with senior Hunters players as well as coach Marum and his staff.
