RUGBY league fans in Port Moresby are set to see the remaining Papua New Guinea Hunters’ home games, with plans underway to move matches from Kalabond Oval to the Sir John Guise Stadium.
The Hunters hosted the Souths Logan Magpies in a test event at the Pacific Games main stadium on June 14 and easily filled the venue’s 15,000 seats despite tickets going on sale only two days before the match. The night match was a first for the city and the Hunters obliged the fans with a 34-12 win. League has been an easy draw in the capital with the Games' nines competition packing the stadium as well. PNG Rugby Football League acting interim chief executive officer Shane Morris would not confirm the plans to move Hunters matches to the city but he advised sponsors and other stakeholders of the impending change in an email this week. “I would like to advise you that Round 20 (26th July 2015) verses the Townsville Blackhawks will be the last game in Kokopo for the Hunters this season. “Kalabond Oval has been an excellent home ground for us over the past two seasons. “For the final three round games of the 2015 Intrust Super Cup Season the SP PNG Hunters will be playing at Sir John Guise Stadium. “Round 21 - Hunters vs East Tigers - (Aug 2); Round 23 - Hunters vs Wynnum Manly Seagulls - (Aug 16); Round 25 - Hunters vs Burleigh Bears - (Aug 30) “The above games are all on Sunday and kick off time will be at 2.30pm. “The new tickets and new passes will start being printed this week and I will also be in touch with you in regards to this. “I thank you for your support and look forward to seeing you at the rest of our home games to urge on our Hunters for the remainder of the season.” The PNGRFL is expected to make a joint announcement soon on the Hunters matches as it is understood that negotiations between the state, the Q-Cup and other stakeholders are taking place. The test event last month saw the Hunters receive a percentage of the gate takings while the Games Organising Committee oversaw the logistics and preparations for the match. The hosting of matches at the stadium is expected to earn the club significantly more money as opposed to what Kalabond which has a capacity of 5000 can offer. The National Comments are closed.
