Whitehaven centre Jessie Joe Parker, has signed a two-year extension at The
Recre, despite attracting interest from other championship sides. The popular centre signed for Whitehaven in 2012 and was ever-present for the Kumuls during last year’s rugby league world cup. His stay at Haven is subject to a successful visa application. It is understood Sheffield Eagles made an enquiry about Parker, but the PNG star was more than happy to commit his future to Whitehaven. Parker has been in good form this season and has reaped the rewards of his partnership with Craig Calvert on the left-hand side as the pair have scored 31 tries between them this year. Parker’s 15th try of the season came against Batley on Saturday, after which the centre said: “I love the people and the club has been so nice to me over the years. “The club has done so much work for me and everyone has made me feel at home.” Unfortunately for Haven, Calvert picked up an injury towards the end of the first half against Batley and will miss the rest of the season. “Craig has been great for me this year,” Parker continued. “He’s always there when I need him and he’s great to play with. “At half-time, I asked him how he was and he said it wasn’t good. “We’ve lost a good winger, but Jordan Burns is playing well and scored against Batley, so I’m looking forward to playing with him.” Haven chief executive officer Barry Richardson said: “We know several clubs were interested in him, but he feels at home here. “We’re delighted. He’s an outstanding player, I don’t think there’s a better centre in the league. “His performances this year have outshone those last year. “Him and Craig have been fantastic this year – the attack down that side has been tremendous. “We’ve had great value and success from tries scored down that side of the field.” With a crucial game coming up away at Sheffield at the weekend Parker and his teammates know that they need to come away from Owlerton Stadium with three points. “All the players are happy at the moment and they are all keen to go and get the win. We’re all ready for it.” – newsandstar.co.uk Comments are closed.
