PAPUA New Guinea Hunter Lawrence Tu’u finally got the monkey off his back, scoring his first try for 2015 against the Ipswich Jets last Sunday.
The Gulf man scored the last try of the match in the 78th minute after backing up an Esau Siune break giving his side a 40-28 victory in a highly entertaining encounter at Kalabond Oval, Kokopo. The normally poker-faced utility forward showed some emotion in putting the result beyond doubt and bagging himself his first try for the South Pacific Brewery-sponsored side. “That was my first try and hopefully it’s not my last one,” said a jubilant Tu’u after the game. The hard-running hooker/backrower slotted into the starting side after returning from suspension and has not let coach Michael Marum down “Since I returned from suspension, I’ve played six games but didn’t have any luck with the tries so it was good to finally get one,” Tuu said. He said Marum had shown faith in him by picking him ahead of other backrow options in Brandy Peter, Sebastian Pandia, Willie Minoga and Timothy Lomai. Tu’u’s return to the Hunters 17 has coincided with the team’s run of six straight victories. Although the modest 24-year-old gave credit to a collective effort led by a superb spine in fullback Stargroth Amean, five-eighth Israel Eliab, halfback Ase Boas and hooker Wartovo Puara Jr, there is a reason Marum has stuck with the small backrower who can fill in at dummy-half and in the centres. Tuu said his six-week suspension for a dangerous throw during a preseason trial match was a learning curve for him and made him appreciate his time on the field. “That suspension taught me to be disciplined when playing and to tackle properly and safely. I have to do the right thing on the field for the team and for myself.” Tu’u will take the field in the No.12 jersey on Saturday night partnering Kato Ottio in the second-row. The National Comments are closed.
