HUNTERS reserve hooker Gahuna Silas has been suspended indefinitely from camp and further training.
The announcement was made yesterday in a press release from the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League. Chief executive officer Bob Cutmore said the suspension would be lifted depending on Silas’ ongoing commitment and dedication to the values of the club and his willingness to show his fellow players and the coaching staff his determination to give his best. This brings the number of Hunters players suspended in 2016 so far to four with Timothy Lomai, Thompson Teteh and Atte Bina Wabo, the other players stood down by the management on similar grounds. The 21-year-old will continue to play for his Digicel Cup side, the Gulf Isapea, and for Royals in the Port Moresby Rugby League. The statement went on to say that no further comment would be made in respect to the suspension but it was hoped that Silas would eventually rejoin the squad following evidence that he was willing to respect the club’s values. Cutmore said Hunters players were regularly advised by him and coach Michael Marum on what was expected of them in terms of their behaviour on and off the field and how it impacted on the club, their sponsors and their fans — needless to say, they were obligated to suspend and discipline players who strayed from that standard. “Silas hasn’t lived up to the values and standard a Hunters player is expected to uphold so we’ve suspended him from camp. “He’s the fourth player to be suspended this year and we want to make it clear that the Hunters have a high standard and anyone associated with the club must adhere to our code of conduct,” Cutmore said. Although he would not go into detail, Cutmore said Silas would be able to redeem himself. “Obviously we want to help Silas and make sure he stays on the right path and becomes successful but he has to learn that he’s part of a team and there are certain things expected of him.” The talented hooker/half accepted his suspension while expressing his remorse and willingness to work on his shortcomings and get back into the Hunters. Silas made his Queensland Cup debut off the bench in the round four clash against the Sunshine Coast Falcons which the Hunters lost 28-20 and has not been picked since. Frustration at not having been picked for any more games could be a factor for the man of mixed Central and Morobe heritage, who in 2014 was tipped for bigger things after helping lead the Junior Kumuls to a Commonwealth Games Nines title in Glasgow, Scotland. But Cutmore said frustration had not been an issue with Silas. Comments are closed.
