SP PNG Hunters coach Michael Marum says the team is preparing well for their first challenge against the Brisbane Broncos next month.
It will be the first trial match for the Hunters scheduled for February 24 at the Oil Search National Football Stadium. Marum said with three weeks to go, training is going well for the boys. He is also happy with the current squad after he managed to trim it down. “The match will be tough and since we are premiership winners, we want to get off to a good start. “The Broncos are experienced and we expect them to come strong,” Marum said. He said with a mix of young and experienced campaigners in the team, they are gelling well. The current team has the potential to do well in the trial and during the season. “It has been a solid six weeks training. We had a 46-member squad and we have cut it down to 29 players. “The Kumuls boys have a separate training … doing their pre-season stuff,” Marum said. With the departure of key forwards, Marum said he is putting his faith in his new recruits to fill the void. He also commended the return of former vice-captain and utility powerhouse Adam Korave as a key figure in the forwards for the 2018 season. “We got strong players from the Digicel Cup. Mekenzie Yei is a strong and tough player. Muka Peter Kulu has been in the team since last year and Aba Baundo who has been really strong in the gym,” Marum said. “We are also happy with the return of Adam (Korave). “His experienced and brings his aggression to the forward pack. “He can play prop, back rower or lock. He has been leading the boys well at training … talking to the new players and with his experience as former vice-captain that’s what we need,” Marum said. Hunters’ captain Ase Boas was seen in a cast at training on his right wrist. Marum said he will hopefully come off this week after an accident during his holiday in East New Britain Province. “Ase sustained an injury during his holidays. He might remove the cast this week and get into some contact training. He still has three weeks to get fit but we are not in any rush to put him to play,” Marum said.
