I SINCERELY thank the Australian government for funding the League Bilong Laif programme currently implemented in schools in four provinces.
It is a major boost not only to the rugby league code, our national sport, but also promotes quality educational outcomes and health benefits. Having witnessed a session in one of our NCD schools, I was amazed to see girls and boys actively involving themselves on and off the field. I admire the programme’s inclusivity of gender and disability, and how it is tailored to suit our education curriculum. I am sure the benefits will be reaped in 10 to 15 years’ time. It would also be useful for our education department to encourage this programme by replicating it in other provinces. The National Rugby League, who are experts in the programme, will provide advice on how best we can roll it out. I am sure if our government is willing to replicate the programme, the Australian government will continue to fund it; this time bigger and better as it is a practical conduit in which development agendas can be driven. I salute Mark Mom and team for getting the value out of the Australian taxpayers’ money and for an incredibly good job done in implementing this grand programme. Observer Morata Swamp
