The SP PNG Hunters delivered a commanding performance in their Round 22 Hostplus Cup match, overpowering the Brisbane Tigers 46-24 at the National Football Stadium in Port Moresby. This decisive victory ensured the Hunters' place in the top eight on the ladder. The Hunters set the pace early, with Sanny Wabo scoring a try in just the fourth minute, igniting what would become a high-scoring game. Solo Wane quickly followed with another try at the 8th minute. Ila Alu extended the lead further with a try at the 15th minute, and Brandon Nima added to the tally at the 32nd minute. Judah Rimbu was also in top form, scoring twice, once at the 35th and again at the 53rd minute, while Finley Glare crossed the line just before halftime at the 40th minute. Jamie Mavoko was reliable with the boot, successfully converting six of the Hunters’ eight tries, adding valuable points to their total. His conversions at the 5th, 17th, 33rd, 37th, 42nd, 54th, and 58th minutes underscored the Hunters' dominance throughout the match.
In the second half, the Brisbane Tigers mounted a spirited comeback. Keagan Russell-Smith broke through the Hunters’ defense to score the Tigers’ first try at the 48th minute, which he converted himself. Tony Thompson added another try at the 71st minute, followed by Ryley Jacks, who scored twice in quick succession at the 74th and 78th minutes. Russell-Smith consistently converted all four tries for the Tigers. Despite the Tigers' late rally, the Hunters' early dominance was too much to overcome. The halftime score stood at 28-0 in favor of the Hunters, and while the Tigers managed to fight back, the final score reflected the Hunters' strong start, finishing at 46-24. This victory not only solidified the Hunters' position within the top eight but also set the stage for their next home game against the Western Clydesdales. With confidence high, the Hunters aim to extend their winning streak in front of their home fans. Also read Comments are closed.
