BARNSTORMING Papua New Guinea Hunters forward Willie Minoga, leading
try-scorer Garry Lo and captain Israel Eliab are in line for Queensland Cup end of season honours. Minoga was nominated for the Queensland Cup’s People’s Choice Award earlier in the week while Lo’s 24-try haul in the regular season puts him in pole position to bag the top try-scorer’s award. Earning the nickname, “the freight train” for his fearless charges, Minoga was named in the competition’s first XIII. Eliab, on the other hand, has been touted as a possible player-of-the-year winner for his consistency throughout the season. SP Hunters chief executive officer Brad Tassell said they had several options but opted for Minoga as other players were in the running for other awards. All Q-Cup teams were asked to nominate a key player for the award, with voting starting on Sunday. The People’s Choice Award will be unveiled at the Queensland Rugby League Gala Dinner at Brisbane City Hall on Wednesday, September 10. To vote for the People’s Choice Award, fans can enter the Queensland Land Rugby League website: www.qrl.com.au “This is the ideal opportunity for the many Hunters fans to get behind Willie (Minoga) so that we can have as many of our players in the running to win the categories available,” Tassell said. “At the moment Israel Eliab is in contention for the prestigious player of the year award. “Barring any exceptional performances this weekend, Garry Lo looks to have wrapped up the top try-scorer award and would certainly be high on the list for rookie of the year voting. We have the biggest fan base of any team in the Q-Cup so we ask for all of our supporters to get online and vote for Willie for the people’s choice award. “Both he (Willie) and Garry have definitely been fan favourites this year.” The SP Hunters are on bye this weekend, Round 26. They will await the results of the two games involving Ipswich Jets (32 points) and Tweed Heads Seagulls (33 points). Both teams sit above the sixth-placed Hunters, who are on 31 points but are guaranteed two points from the bye. Other categories are decided by the referees and other panellists but the People’s Choice Award is determined by the general public through their votes. Northern Pride’s Hezron Murgha was the inaugural recipient of the award last year. Voting closes at midnight on Sunday, September 7. Multiple entries submitted by the same person will not be accepted. A lucky fan selected from a random draw will win two tickets and a food and drinks package valued at $150 (K351) to the Q-Cup grand final at Suncorp Stadium on September 28. Comments are closed.
