Roared on by a passionate Port Moresby crowd, Papua New Guinea Hunters produced a powerhouse display to defeat Western Clydesdales 48-12 in Round 20 of the Hostplus Cup at Santos National Football Stadium on Sunday, 10th August. The electric atmosphere inspired the Hunters to run in 10 tries in a commanding all-round performance. The energy from the stands was felt early, with Judah Rimbu crossing in just the second minute. The Hunters built momentum through further first-half tries from Solo Wane, Sanny Wabo, and Robert Mathias. The Clydesdales’ only response before the break came from Emry Pere, leaving the hosts ahead 16-6 at halftime. After the restart, the Hunters lifted another gear. Alex Max extended the lead in the 42nd minute before Douglas David powered over twice in quick succession. Robert Mathias secured his second try of the match, while Manisa Kai and Jordan Pat added late four-pointers to seal a comprehensive result.
Clent Lama kept the scoreboard ticking with four successful conversions in the second half. The Clydesdales managed a consolation through Joseph Litidamu in the 71st minute, with Corey Fenning converting both of his side’s tries. The Hunters’ performance was marked by sharp ball movement, quick play-the-balls, and relentless attacking waves that left the visitors struggling to hold their defensive shape. The home side’s willingness to spread the ball wide created scoring chances across the park. A late sin bin for Epel Kapinias in the 79th minute did little to affect the final outcome, with the Hunters’ defensive resilience ensuring they finished the match on their terms. The Clydesdales, despite moments of promise, were outmatched in both pace and execution. With this victory, the Hunters not only maintained their strong home record but also sent a clear message to their Hostplus Cup rivals. Backed by their loyal supporters, the Port Moresby-based team will be aiming to carry this form into the final rounds of the season. Also read Comments are closed.
