FORMER Agmark Guria Kevin Frank has signed a two-year contract with the Parkes Spacemen rugby league football club in the New South Wales country competition.
The former Prime Minister’s XIII back had a one-year stint with the Forbes Magpies in the Group 11 competition which is part of the NSW Country League. Frank left for Sydney today. Frank has been engaged by the club to work for Chemstore Ltd, an industrial glass products company — while playing. He confirmed that his family will later move down to stay with him in Sydney. Franksaid yesterday that he was happy to further his rugby league career in Australia. The 32-year-old still harbours a desire to represent PNG and said he would be willing to play in the national colours if called up. He will be the fourth player from PNG to have joined the Spaceman after former Kumuls Rodney Pora, Larsen Marabe and Nixon Kolo had stints there. “We had several PNG players playing for Parkes and it’s a privilege to join them for the next two seasons,” Frank, who plays centre or in backrow, said. The Enga local broke into the PNG Prime Minister’s XIII and later Kumuls, when he played for the Port Moresby Vipers in 2009. His dream of further call-ups to the Kumuls saw him join the Gurias in 2010 but he returned from Kokopo in 2011 to play for the Vipers. He was back playing with the Gurias in the 2012 and 2013 seasons. It was there that Frank got an opportunity at the Magpies, after playing for the Gurias in a trial match against a the Canterbury Bulldog’s Under-20 last February. The National Whitehaven centre Jessie Joe Parker, has signed a two-year extension at The
Recre, despite attracting interest from other championship sides. The popular centre signed for Whitehaven in 2012 and was ever-present for the Kumuls during last year’s rugby league world cup. His stay at Haven is subject to a successful visa application. It is understood Sheffield Eagles made an enquiry about Parker, but the PNG star was more than happy to commit his future to Whitehaven. Parker has been in good form this season and has reaped the rewards of his partnership with Craig Calvert on the left-hand side as the pair have scored 31 tries between them this year. Parker’s 15th try of the season came against Batley on Saturday, after which the centre said: “I love the people and the club has been so nice to me over the years. “The club has done so much work for me and everyone has made me feel at home.” Unfortunately for Haven, Calvert picked up an injury towards the end of the first half against Batley and will miss the rest of the season. “Craig has been great for me this year,” Parker continued. “He’s always there when I need him and he’s great to play with. “At half-time, I asked him how he was and he said it wasn’t good. “We’ve lost a good winger, but Jordan Burns is playing well and scored against Batley, so I’m looking forward to playing with him.” Haven chief executive officer Barry Richardson said: “We know several clubs were interested in him, but he feels at home here. “We’re delighted. He’s an outstanding player, I don’t think there’s a better centre in the league. “His performances this year have outshone those last year. “Him and Craig have been fantastic this year – the attack down that side has been tremendous. “We’ve had great value and success from tries scored down that side of the field.” With a crucial game coming up away at Sheffield at the weekend Parker and his teammates know that they need to come away from Owlerton Stadium with three points. “All the players are happy at the moment and they are all keen to go and get the win. We’re all ready for it.” – newsandstar.co.uk Following a summer of Test match rugby league across the continents, the new world rankings have been announced by the International Federation, the first since the 2013 World Cup.

Recently appointed chairman of the RLIF, Nigel Wood, commented: “An increasing number of matches are being sanctioned in line with new protocols introduced last year.” “That is an encouraging sign of the importance our members place on international rugby league and is part of the legacy of the most successful World Cup ever staged last autumn.” Wood added: “As we begin the build up to the next one, I would like to congratulate those nations who have moved up in the rankings and, in particular, Spain and Denmark both of whom registered their first official Test victories this summer.” RUGBY LEAGUE – WORLD RANKINGS – 1st August 2014 1) Australia 2) New Zealand 3) England 4) France 5) Fiji 6) Wales 7) Samoa 8) PNG 9) USA 10) Ireland 11) Scotland 12) Italy 13) Tonga 14) Russia 15) Cook Islands 16) Canada 17) Serbia 18) Germany 19) Norway 20) Ukraine 21) Lebanon 22) Belgium 23) Malta 24) Jamaica 25) Netherlands 26) Greece 27) Denmark 28) Spain 29) South Africa 30) Czech Republic 31) Latvia 32) Sweden 33) Hungary 34) Morocco Note: Rankings are based upon results and weighted by the strength of opposition. GOROKA Lahanis defeated Simbu Lions 26-19 in a trial rugby league match leading up to the 2014 Digicel Cup competition played in Goroka over the weekend.
Lions fought strongly to come back in the second half after being down 5-16 at the break, but Lahanis maintained a strong defence to hold on to win at full time. Rugby league supporters at the National Sport Institute in Goroka who watched the trial game gave applauded the Lions when they displayed fast movements in both defence and attack.
