The SP PNG Hunters have defeated Wynnum Manly Seagulls 24 - 10 in round two of the Intrust Super Cup match a short while ago. This is the Hunters second win of the season. The first win was against Magpies 36 - 18 last week. In the first half, the Hunters scored three unanswered tries to lead 16 - 0. In the second half, the Seagulls were first to score, however, the ball could find the uprights and they trailed 16 - 4. The Hunters extended the lead with a penalty goal to 18 - 4 after a foul play from the Seagulls. The Hunters scored another try through Amean to extend the lead to 24 - 4.. The Seagulls fought back with a consolation try to reduce the margin to 24 - 10. The Hunters won 24 - 10 at full time. The Hunters will return home to take on Tweed Head Seagulls at the National Football Stadium next weekend . BOAS brothers, Ase and Watson, reunite in the halves for the first time since 2014 when the PNG Hunters take on Wynnum Manly Seagulls on Sunday. The pair got to play part of the second half in last week’s Intrust Super Cup opening round win over the Souths Logan Magpies but are set to start in the halves for the round two clash in Brisbane. With first choice halfback Atte Bina serving a one-match suspension, 21-year-old Watson gets his chance in the No.7 jersey and given his combination with big brother Ase could spark the Hunters to their first win over Wynnum Manly at BMD Kougari Oval. n From Back Page The venue has not been a happy hunting ground for coach Michael Marum’s men since entering the competition in 2014. The South Pacific Brewery-sponsored side have lost the two matches played there: 28-10 (2014) and 36-18 (2015). Watson’s direction and kicking from first receiver will complement 26-year-old Ase’s running game, which was evident as the 2013 World Cup representative cut through the defence on two occasions against the Magpies — one of which saw him score in the second half at Davies Park. The younger Boas admitted it was good to be rekindling his combination in the halves with Ase, which had developed while playing for the Royals in the local competition in Kokopo, East New Britain, in 2014 as well as in the Digicel Cup for the Agmark Gurias. “It is a different level to the Digicel Cup but we have trained hard and we will do well,” Watson said. “Last week I came on and played my game and it was good to get the experience and the confidence.” Captain Noel Zeming will take his place at left centre after Marum confirmed the goal-kicking ace had passed a preliminary fitness test. Justin Olam shifts to the wing replacing the suspended Adex Wera, while Philemon Kimisive bides his time as 18th man. Back-rowers Brandy Peter and Tuvi Lepan have been named on an extended bench, with Southern Highlander Peter returning from a left wrist injury and East New Briton Lepan hoping to get his first game under his belt. Fullback Stargroth Amean looked to be carrying multiple injuries after last week’s effort, with the Engan packing ice on both legs and upper body during training this week but has been declared fit to take up his custodial role. “I’m okay. I’m fit and ready to go again,” Amean said at training on Tuesday. The Seagulls halves of five-eighth and captain Patrick Templeman and halfback Mathew Seamark will be more than a match for the Boas brothers and will be out to get their side off the bottom of the table after their 44-22 loss to the Burleigh Bears. Hunters: Stargorth Amean, Bland Abavu, Noel Zeming, Thompson Teteh, Justin Olam, Ase Boas, Watson Boas, Henry Wan, Wartovo Puara Jr, Esau Siune, Nickson Borona, Warren Glare, Ishamel Balkawa; Reserves: Benjamin Hetra, Edward Goma, Tuvi Lepan, Brandy Peter, Philemon Kimisive. The National BRISBANE Broncos coach Wayne Bennett was impressed with the performance of the SP Papua New Guinea Hunters in their 36-18 opening round win over the Souths Logan Magpies in the Intrust Super Cup in Brisbane on Sunday. Bennett, who is a former Magpies coach and won a Q-Cup premiership in 1985, told PNG Rugby Football League chief executive officer Bob Cutmore that he was impressed with how Michael Marum’s side handled themselves at Davies Park. The Hunters led 12-10 at halftime and despite a committed performance from the Magpies, were able to grab two points from their first hit-out in 2016. Cutmore made special mention of debutants Justin Olam and Benjamin Hetra, who stood out in the 18-point win. Hunters have clean record against the Magpies, beating the southern Brisbane side comfortably in their five matches played since 2014: 42-12, 44-14 (2014), 40-18, 34-12 (2015) and 36-18 (2016). The Magpies have produced Australian rugby league stars including Queensland and Australian Kangaroos great Mal Meninga, Gary Belcher and Peter Jackson. Bennett has contributed to helping the Hunters cause, with coach Michael Marum spending a week with the club last month to learn from the coaching staff of the club. Cutmore has a close relationship with Bennett, having been involved with the Broncos since the club’s formative years in 1988 and was chief operating officer of Broncos Leagues Club in 2015 before taking on the PNGRL chief executive officer’s job in October last year. He said one of his priorities was to establish development and talent identification programmes for players in PNG, who are being recruited by Australian and UK clubs in growing numbers. Bennett's brother Bob coached PNG Kumuls from 1996-2005. The National PAPUA New Guinea SP Hunters halfback Atte Bina and winger Adex Wera were handed one-match suspensions for a dangerous throw on Souths Logan Magpies prop Andrew Edwards by the Queensland Cup judiciary.
Bina was suspended last year for a lifting charge on Townsville fullback Jahrome Huges and he was cited by match officials for his tackle on Edwards in the 28th minute of the first half while Wera was rubbed out for a game as well for his part in the tackle. Aside from the bans, coach Michael Marum has stuck with the line-up that beat the Magpies 36-18 last Sunday, with centre Justin Olam shifting to Wera’s wing spot and captain Noel Zeming returning to the left centre position for their round two fixture against the Wynnum Manly Seagulls at BMD Kougari Oval in Brisbane on Sunday. Marum said Zeming, who withdrew from the Magpies game because a left knee problem, would be given until Friday to prove his fitness. If Zeming is unable to pass the final fitness test, hooker Wartovo Puara Jr would lead the side again while 18th man Philemon Kimisive is expected to start on the wing, with Olam shifting back to centre. Taking Bina’s spot in the No.7 jersey will be new recruit Watson Boas, which will see the Hunters first brother combination in the halves with Ase Boas at five-eighth. Watson, who came on in the second half against Souths Logan, acquitted himself well to the first receiver role, taking over the kicking and directing play from older brother Ase. Watson, 21, said he was happy to be reuniting with Ase, 24, as the pair had played together in their local club in Kokopo. The younger Boas, who played for the PNG Prime Minister’s XIII last year, said it was the first time for him to compete in a higher level competition such as the Q-Cup but he felt comfortable, especially in his combination with brother Ase in the halves. Backrowers Brandy Peter and Tuvi Lepan have been added onto Marum’s extended bench.
