THE Intrust Super Cup match between the SP PNG Hunters and Burleigh Bears on Sunday illustrated several areas of concern which should be addressed soon.
The Australian players are always bigger, bulkier and heavier than our boys. Someone should have found a way to use that to our advantage instead of using our usual strategies. If we can’t go through them, we certainly can go around, over or under them. The only time this simple strategy was used was when Jokadi Bire ducked under the chest high defense of two bear’s defenders and raced away to score in the left corner.

The Hunters need to play smarter football using their minds and skills in order to do better in their running game, kicking and defence.
They need to play intelligently and try things that will stretch, push and bend the defences. By Andrews Peter Thank you Michael Marum, not for the close 26-28 score line performance by our boys but for taking into consideration some of the valid points that we raised through the Social Media. Because you paid attention to (critical) observers on the sideline, there was an encouraging improvement from the previous two mostly disheartening performance by our team. HUNTERS coach Michael Marum is urged to drop halfback William Mone for his poor performance.
The game between the Hunters and Falcons on Sunday show no input from Mone as playmaker. Is he still shopping for a fullback for the SP PNG Hunters competing in the Queensland Intrust Super Cup competition this season? Or could this local kid just be the man answering some of the questions hovering over his head on a permanent fullback for the Hunters.
With SP PNG Hunters coach Michael Marum playing a gamble week-in week-out, he could be already finding a solution to the jigsaw puzzle. And could it be this 23-year-old from Manamiro village in Central Province. Jeffrey Lemb writes.
Why am I not interested in the Hunters any more and what bullshit MM has to say about this useless team. I dont buy the daily papers anymore. Change the make up of the team or sack the coach and things will change for the better. Stop this joke now. Whoever is responsible for Rugby League in this country should be equally concerned. I have seen all your comments thus far and feel that most of you are short sighted and allowed emotions to take the better of you. Kimil Rugby Football League president Michael Tee is calling on the PNG Rugby Football League to properly scout for raw talents throughout the country.
Tee made the call after one of his players Joe Frank who performed exceptionally well during the popular Coca-Cola Ipatas Cup competition, was overlooked for selection at the top level. He said Frank is a star off-season player, who started his career in the Kimil off-season league and made his way to the Digicel Cup. He was selected to play for the Waghi Tumbe side from 2015 to 2016. Last season, he was drafted by the Mendi Muruks, and is most likely to retain his spot in the Southern Hghlands franchise side for this season which gets underway on March 25. Tee firmly beleives Frank is one of those talented players who deserves better recognition from the national selectors. He was selected in the PNG Hunters 50-man side in 2016, but failed to make it through further. He is a utility player who can play center or five-eighth. Tee is now appealing to national selectors and the PNG Rugby Football League to have a strategy in place so that they can visit the local leagues and scout for potential talents. He said there were so many talents in the local leagues who deserve better recognition. He said the Ipatas Cup has created a pathway for raw talents who deserve some form of recognition. “We have one or two potential players. But when they are in a losing side that doesn’t qualify for a Gold Pass (Ipatas Cup) to the second-stage of the competition, then they (players) get overlooked,” Post Courier By Ben Heir Two Lazy defense on the right flank (outside center and right wing) cost the PNG HUNTERS their game against the Burleigh Bears in the ANZAC KOKODA challenge on Monday. A fumbled by #3 of a sure try set play move summed up the PNG HUNTERS first half performance that saw the score line of 14-0 in the first half. The dummy took a fair while to click into action. With the injection of PUARA into the match towards the end of first half the hunters looked threatening. The little general commandeering in the second half couldn't finish it off for the PNG HUNTERS. Bland Abavu on the left wing was in scintillating form. Scored the first try for the PNG HUNTERS only minutes into the second half and was on his game in both defense and carting the ball up relieving forwards. The big boys up front and off the bench did their job well. The PNG HUNTERS will have to work on their mental focus. Three games now they have got themselves into catch up footfall situation. Sometimes could prove costly like in the ANZAC KOKODA challenge. A perfect example of mind not game ready was straight from kick off. The ball ended up rolling out of play in goal straight from kick off conceding a 20 meter penalty. PNG HUNTERS will have to work on GAME MIND FOCUS and come away from catch up footie . Overall it was a good game for the PNG HUNTERS. Bears win was with a little bit of help from the game officials. Bears first try was off a clear knock on by Bears that wasn't called by referee and touch judge and wasn't even referred to the bunker. Burleigh Bears 20 PNG Hunters 18. AFTER seeing Kato Ottio’s performance I was really impressed with his second game. In the first outing he was a bit nervous. At times he was seeing hesitant to take the ball forward but instead opted to pass. In the second game he showed some confidence. My advice is be confident and put your body on the line and show your true self. NRL is the toughest competition in the world and not many ordinary Papua New Guineans like you have made it. Only those kids who play overseas or are brought up there make it to into NRL. However, if you want to be like Marcus Bai then press on because sky is the limit now for you. On the other hand, I would like to congratulate Gahuna Silas for a great performance. He also has what it takes and it’s now up to coach Michael Marum to utilise this new found pocket dynamo. Switchoff, via email Willie Minoga, described as the ‘freight train’, was thankful for his People’s Choice Award and thanked all his fans and SP PNG Hunters’ supporters for their votes. Minoga was honoured with the Intrust Super Cup People’s Choice Award at the Queensland Rugby League gala dinner annual award last night in Brisbane. He received over 1, 000 votes from the public both in PNG and Australia who participated in the online voting. Minoga, on arrival from Brisbane today, thanked fans and supporters who were behind the team from day one. “I am privileged to have participated in that level of competition and proud to have received the award,” he said. Minoga is looking forward to more supporters next season and to increase his fan base but it depends on his performance. “I have learned a lot from the competition after starting my career at the local level and moving up to the international level is overwhelming. “I was excited and humbled when receiving the award because it was my first time,” Minoga said. He added that if he was given the chance to play in NRL, he would definitely take it because that is what many of them are aiming for to bring PNG into the NRL competition. Meantime, Garry Lo picked up awards for Top Try Scorer and Rookie of the Year on the night in Brisbane for scoring 25 tries this season, most of which were the best tries. |
