THE Waghi Tumbe finally cracked the egg with a hard-fought 16-14 upset win over the Mendi Muruks in Mendi yesterday.
The win for the Jiwaka franchise came days after theclub management made changes to the coaching staff. The Muruks were guilty of complacency after last week’s win over the Hela Wigmen. The Simbu Lions have proven they are a different outfit in 2015, with a 10-4 win over the Enga Mioks in Kundiawa yesterday. The TNA-sponsored franchise shrugged off the off-field issues in Western Highlands last week to eke out a close by deserved 6-point win over the Engans at Dickson Oval. The win puts Gerard Philip’s men on top of the table in the Northwestern Pool with nine points. The Lions are yet to lose a match in 2015, having now won four games and drawn one. In Lae, the Tigers scored a 28-14 win over the Gulf Isapea in a match that was a testament to how improved the Isapea were more than how well the home side played. After losing to the Agmark Gurias 20-12 in Round 3, the Tigers were expected to maul the Crocs but that was not the case as the Gulf side gave a surprisingly good account of themselves. Tigers were first to score off a repeat set through centre Pasu Awani which was converted by vice-captain and five-eighth Charlie Simon for a 6-0 lead. The home side extended their lead to 10-0 after a centre field penalty saw fullback Robert Vuai breaking the line and setting up winger Justin Olam. The Isapea regrouped and managed to get inside the Tigers’ 22 and Kamb Yer provided the off-load that sent five-eighth Joshua Memafu over the line for the visitors. The National Comments are closed.
