HE may be a new recruit but he is an old hand.
Papua New Guinea Hunters centre Jason Tali made the most of his opportunity by doing the job coach Michael Marum wanted of him. Tali scored two tries against the Sunshine Coast Falcons last Saturday and proved his worth as a dangerous runner. “He’s getting into the pace of the game,” Marum said. “We went to the Gurias and Vipers game and walking back to camp he told me how fast-paced the Queensland Cup game was. “In his first game he was slow getting back in the line. “Playing in the centres really works for him. “He has his wantok Gary Lo outside of him so that gives him confidence knowing someone is there to cover for him when he needs it,” Marum said. “I think Tali’s style makes for good combinations with Garry Lo, Adex Wera, and Thompson Tete. “He is one of the best-attacking centres in our team. “Tali has picked up well.” Marum said Tali was initially scouted for the Hunters team but his preparations to play in England cost him an early look in for the Hunters when the England trip did not work out. “He wanted to come back to the Hunters after the planned trip to England didn’t work out but we told him to go back to the Lae Tigers and play some Digicel Cup matches to stay fit and ready. “He did just that and it’s good to see him reap the rewards. “We’re happy for him,” Marum said of the 25-year-old. The Hunters training this week has been affected by wet weather in Kokopo. Marum said if the rain continued, he would be forced to conduct training in the wet in preparation for the likelihood of playing in similar conditions in their game against the Burleigh Bears on Saturday. The sixth-placed Hunters face the seventh-placed Bears in a crossroads Round 21 match-up with a win for the home side guaranteed to keep them in contention for a top four spot. The National Comments are closed.
