THE Papua New Guinea Hunters missed out on a spot in the 2014 Queensland Cup
finals. Despite picking up two points for a bye, results that the Michael Marum-coached side desperately needed did not go its way. On Saturday, the Ipswich Jets held off a spirited challenge by the Redcliffe Dolphins, winning 30-24 and locking in their finals spot. The Jets moved up to 34 points and secured fifth spot, a point clear of the Hunters on 33 points. Yesterday, the Tweed Heads Seagulls beat Mackay Cutters 26-22 to advance to 35 points and finish in fourth place. In other notable Q-Cup results, minor premiers the Northern Pride were upset by the lowly Burleigh Bears 29-28 and the Easts Tigers went down to fellow finals team Wynnum Manly Seagulls 18-14. Marum said the side was prepared for whatever eventuated and said the focus would now be on improving for next season. “Unfortunately, the results didn’t go our way. We’ll stay in camp for the next few days packing up before the players and coaching staff leave Kokopo by Wednesday or Thursday for a short break,” Marum said. “We’ll all return to camp in the second week of November to start getting ready for next season. We don’t want to leave it until the last round to the make the finals in 2015 that’s for sure. “Next time we’ll be in the top five before the end of the regular season.” Marum said he would keep in contact with all Hunters players over the coming weeks as the Prime Minister’s XIII and the Kumuls would be named this month. “There are two international matches on the calendar – the Prime Minister’s XIII and the Test match against Tonga on October 12 and 19 – so we’ll definitely expect the boys (Hunters) to maintain their fitness because we are looking at several of them,” Marum said. PNG Rugby Football League chairman Sandis Tsaka said last month that players from the Digicel Cup, the Hunters squad and the national zone championships would be considered for representative duties this year. No announcement has been made on who will coach the Kumuls in 2014, however, Marum is a strong candidate to coach the PNG PM’s XIII side. Comments are closed.
