The Ipswich Jets broke their away ground hoodoo against Tweed Heads Seagulls in emphatic fashion, defeating the Seagulls 28-10 in their Queensland Cup elimination final at Piggabeen on Sunday.
In the other final, the Easts Tigers defeated the Wynnum Manly Seagulls 18-12 at BMD Kougari Oval. In cold, windy and wet conditions, Ipswich muscled up in defence to end a run of 13 consecutive defeats against the Tweed south of the border. A gritty Ipswich led 14-4 at halftime, thanks to tries to Kurt and Liam Capewell and former Papua New Guinea representative Rod Griffin. Tweeds Jamal Fogarty got his side on the board with an unconverted try. Jets drove the nail into the coffin with a Marmin Barba special. Wes Conlon made the break and found Barba on the inside to score his 21st try this year and go within one try of equalling the club record of 22. Barba converted and after 42 minutes the Jets were up 20-4. The Jets defence stood up to the test for the next 25 minutes as they repelled everything the Seagulls threw at them. Jets’ Wes Conlon broke Tweed hearts with a one-on-one steal and ran 70-metres to score and take the Jets to 26-4 with 13 minutes to go. The Tweed’s Ricardo Parata finished a slick backline movement towards the right hand corner and gave the Seagulls some shaky hope at 26-10 in the 74th minute. In the other game, the Tigers benefitted greatly from the return of Melbourne Storm pair Cameron Munster and Felise Kaufusi to grind out a six-point win over Wynnum. Comments are closed.
